Recognition for Sichuan enzyme-based waste management system

An enzyme-based system aimed at helping tanners manage waste from their wet-end processes has won recognition at the national science and technology awards in China.

The system, developed at the University of Sichuan by a research team led by Professor Shi Bi, is working in pilot projects at seven tanneries across China and, the university has said, is proving effective in reducing chemical oxygen demand in the tanneries’ wastewater treatment plants.

The Sichuan team received the award at a science and technology congress in Beijing at the start of January.
