Automotive industry expert Professor Ferdinand Dudenhöffer of the University of Duisburg-Essen has said the interior materials automotive companies use, including leather, are going to have to play a part in meeting car users’ increasing demand for communication and entertainment inside their vehicles.

Professor Duddenho¨ffer was one of the main speakers at an event in the Netherlands hosted by leather chemicals company Stahl on September 24 to open its new centre of excellence for automotive. In response to a question from World Leather, he said car interior suppliers are going to have to supply materials that have smartphone-like touchscreen surfaces.

“All car manufacturers are thinking about touchscreen technology,” he said. “I think that in about 20 years’ time, a car interior will be a giant touchscreen.”
