ACLE date changes unavoidable with sales of 100 million hides at stake

The organisers of the All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) have explained again that the change in dates for the 2015 edition of the Shanghai event is the result of a late decision from the Chinese government to celebrate a public holiday on the original dates; the government wants to mark the end of World War II.

As a result, ACLE will now take place from August 31 to September 2.

The organisers said they wanted still to be able to give an opportunity to the thousands of Chinese buyers who usually attend ACLE to source leather and other materials there, and to do so on “normal working days”. Last year, according to the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA), Chinese importers brought into the country raw hides, crust, wet blue and finished leather with a combined value of $8.2 billion.

CLIA chairman, Su Chaoying, said at the end of 2014 that he believed Chinese tanners would process 200 million hides in the course of 2015 and that 50% of these, 100 million hides, would have to be imported. “These huge numbers offer western companies multiple opportunities to do excellent business with the China leather sector,” ACLE organisers have said.
