Scottish tannery eyes fish-skin move after social media success

A small-scale tannery in the north of Scotland is looking to expand following a social media campaign that boosted global orders.

The Shetland Tannery was set up in 2012 by former BLC student Natalie Cairns-Ratter, who spotted a gap in the market for processing the skins from a Lerwick-based slaughterhouse, and spread the word on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

As well as tanning local sheepskin and goatskin, she has plans for a range of finished goods including slippers, cushions and rugs.

“Our expansion plans are to refit our small workshop for bigger retail space, take on staff and start to rebrand,” Ms Cairns-Ratter tells leatherbiz.com. “We are hoping to achieve this all this year.”

She also hopes to tan salmon skin, and is working on processes to improve the finish.
