Brazil has a new sustainability certification programme for leather

01/04/2015
Brazil’s tanning industry association, CICB, has successfuly introduced a new sustainability certification programme for Brazilian leather that it first announced in June 2013.
The new programme is called the Certificação de Sustentabilidade do Couro Brasileiro (CSCB), or the ‘Sustainable Certification of Brazilian Leather’.

Industry sources in Brazil have told leatherbiz that, while CICB and Brazilian tanners have given significant support to a number of international industry initiatives, the thinking in the Brazilian leather sector was that these programmes missed out components focusing on social aspects.

The standard has now been released and the certification process is under way. Brazil’s biggest tanning group, JBS, has said it will attempt to CSCB certify three of its facilities in Brazil, two wet blue tanneries and a finishing plant, in what remains of 2015.
