Northampton’s leather students give Mayor of London a warm welcome

Hundreds of students turned out to meet – and take selfies with – Mayor of London Boris Johnson as he toured the University of Northampton, paying visits to the leather department and tannery, the only facility of its kind in the UK.

Rachel Garwood, director of the Institute of Creative Leather Technologies, showed him around the facility as he inspected students’ work and learnt about leather making.

In his inimitable style, he joked about leather having “fetish” qualities, but said more seriously that London relies on skilled people elsewhere in the country.

“Here, in this university, people are acquiring the skills to do it, so it’s interesting to see the integration between the London economy and Northamptonshire,” he said.
