Leather employment initiative exceeds COTANCE’s expectations
30/06/2014
Called Leather Is My Job, the initiative involves COTANCE working jointly with trade union organisation industriAll; together they refer to themselves as the sector’s “social partners”. The initiative has the support of the European Commission.
Following regional events in Northampton and Bucharest in May, the social partners hosted what they called a mid-term event in Edinburgh in June to review progress on Leather Is My Job.
In a statement following the meeting, COTANCE said the event had offered an opportunity to review the findings of the regional meetings, including a series of testimonies from people already working in the leather industry. In all, different national bodies have gathered more than 50 testimonies from 25 tanneries in seven countries.
“The objective of this social dialogue initiative is to awaken in people, particularly young people, an appetite for thinking about careers in the leather industry. By providing the testimonies of those already working in the industry and conveying the reasons for their career choice, the leather industry intends to break certain deep-rooted misconceptions about a profession that is offering good jobs.”
A concluding Leather Is My Job event will take place in Bucharest on October 23 at which the social partners will present the conclusions they have drawn from the year-long project.
