Hueni urges Dhaka tanners to avoid turning Savar into “new Hazaribagh”
Swiss tanning drum and automation equipment supplier Hueni AG Process Controls hosted a seminar in Dhaka in mid-June, aiming to encourage Bangladeshi tanners to take advantage of their forced move to the new tanning cluster at Savar to invest in high-end technology.

With tanners facing the upheaval of the move anyway, Hueni chief executive, Peter Mastelic, travelled to Bangladesh to demonstrate how his company’s latest technology works, with Brazilian partner company Systemhaus also in attendance to show how automated systems can link directly to enterprise resource planning software.

Tannery owners and technicians attended the event.

Mr Mastelic said the move from the existing Hazaribagh tanning cluster to the new site at Savar represented a unique opportunity for tanners “to change the approach and mentality of the tanning industry in Bangladesh” and to move from “the unacceptable situation of Hazaribagh” to a modern, well-equipped cluster, where consistent quality leather can be produced “in a socially and environmentally acceptable way”.

The seminar underlined that it was important to avoid allowing Savar to turn into what Mr Mastelic called “a new Hazaribagh” but to take on board the achievements of many excellent tanning clusters around the world and make Savar “an example of quality and virtue”. He added that this would allow Bangladeshi tanners to open up new markets.

He said he hoped the tanners would “go for quality rather than for price”.
