Big growth for Bangladesh leather industry

12/05/2014
The much-maligned leather industry in Bangladesh has reported year-on-year growth of almost 40% for the first nine months of the current financial year, July 2013 to March 2014.

Bangladeshi tanners have been criticised by campaign groups for their environmental performance and are still embroiled in a decade-long dispute with the government over a mass-move from the Hazaribagh cluster near capital city Dhaka to a new, purpose-built site at Savar.

In spite of this, the country’s official export promotion bureau has confirmed export earnings for the sector of more than $960 million for the nine-month period, compared to $670 million in the same period a year earlier.

The value of exports of leather increased by 40% to $381.1 million, while leather footwear exports increased in value by 31.7% to reach $410.2 million, and leathergoods achieved an increase of 62.8%, reaching almost $170 million.
