“Stunning leather” is top of Rachael Ruddick’s shopping list

Leathergoods designer Rachael Ruddick has said that adding footwear and “a broader leathergoods collection” made the recently ended autumn-winter 2013-2014 fashion season the strongest yet for the own-name brand she founded in 2009.

Now based in New York, Ms Ruddick recently told media in her native Australia that she positions the brand between high fashion and high street because it was here she perceived there to be a gap in the market. However, she insisted her aim is always “to work with stunning leather” and high-quality finished product manufacturing partners.

This means she travels widely to visit not just her suppliers, but often suppliers several steps up the value chain. Most tanners she visits during regular visits to Lineapelle, but her interest in exotics has also led her to specialist snakeskin tanneries in Thailand and crocodile farms in the north of Australia.

She said she loves designing accessories because they create “punctuation”. She explains: “They can completely change a look. People can experiment with their accessories, and pull them out over years of wear to continue to enjoy.
