APLF meetings confirm Turkish tanners’ 2014 concerns

07/04/2014
Almost 50 Turkish tanneries and leather garment manufacturers took part in the APLF exhibition in Hong Kong at the end of March and start of April.

There was a consensus among Turkish exhibitors at the end of the event that 2014 will be a difficult year for them.

For double-face tanners, new-season skins are available at much lower prices than in 2013. But the tanners said at APLF that they felt unable to take advantage of this because of uncertainty surrounding important markets such as Ukraine and Russia, while domestic supply is satisfying demand in China.

For tanners producing shoe-upper leather, raw material prices continue to go up, making it hard for Turkish producers to compete with tanners in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Brazil or China.

Finally, leather garment manufacturers said they were experiencing a slow-down in demand with, once again, keen competition from rivals in Pakistan and adequate supply to the Chinese market from Chinese manufacturers.
