New leather school will help Rondônia attract tanneries

The state government of Rondônia, in the north-west of Brazil, is to set up a new tanning school and sent representatives to the 2014 Fimec exhibition in Novo Hamburgo to discuss the project with chemical and machinery suppliers. The delegation also aimed to build up contacts with leather companies in the hope of persuading them to open new tanneries in Rondônia in the years ahead.

Head of the delegation, Adilson Júlio Pereira, explained at Fimec: “Rondônia is an important cattle-raising state and we are currently producing 2.2 million hides per year. At the moment, these leave the state as wet blue, for tanneries in other parts of Brazil and overseas, but now we need to add value to that raw material ourselves.”

An industry body already active in the state, ITTECCRO, said during the Novo Hamburgo event that a new tanning school would be the first step in helping the leather sector in Rondônia advance. The organisation’s president, Wille Marques, said a local business leader had already donated a 20,000 square-metre site in Cacoal for the new school, which ITTECCRO will run in partnership with the state authorities.
