The skins come from her family tannery, Pokka Reindeer Hides, which produces finished leather as well as picked and wet blue reindeer skins and was established in 1969.
“Reindeer are very abundant Northern Scandinavia and reindeer is not at all endangered species,” says the tannery. “We have been sharing our knowledge with most of the slaughterhouses within the Scandinavia and Greenland regions, and have provided a guide for preserving raw reindeer skin.”
Mariela Pokka has recently opened a showroom in the Artic Circle to showcase the garments which are made in Italy, and will exhibit at the Mifur fur and leather show in Milan in March.
