Greenland tannery to diversify

06/07/2016
Greenland-based tannery Great Greenland, which up until now has primarily marketed sealskin, is to diversify its product line. The tannery will now also process sheepskin and reindeer hide.

According to local media reports, Great Greenland began testing new processing equipment in 2015 and expects to begin selling sheepskin this autumn. A number of potential wholesale clients have reportedly expressed an interest in purchasing the processed hides.

A local meatpacker has provided an initial 7,000 sheepskins for processing and if the tannery continues with its plan to sell reindeer hide later in 2016, they would also be sourced from a regional meatpacker.

The company is also considering expanding to other types of hides, including hare, rabbit and muskoxen, but managing director Ditte Storknæs said Great Greenland will only sell hides from animals that have been raised or hunted for food.
