Thai Leathergoods Association appeals for raw materials help

18/11/2013
Suriya Prateepmanowong, president of the Thai Leathergoods Association, has said manufacturers in the Asian country need the help of the government to bring down the cost of raw materials.

As well as high import taxes on raw material coming into Thailand, the local industry has complained of a lack of available labour and high production costs in general.

Mr Prateepmanowong said in comments to local media that manufacturers in Thailand were trying to make their supply chains more efficient and trying to focus on innovation, but he said a lowering of tariffs on imported raw materials from current levels of up to 30%, was necessary to bring down the cost of production in Thailand.

In the first nine months of 2013, leather-sector exports from Thailand had a value of $1.3 billion.
