Mercedes plans Brazil plant to keep up with rivals

Mercedes-Benz, the world’s third-biggest maker of luxury cars, is set to unveil plans to resume Brazilian auto production in 2016 to bypass high import taxes and to keep up with rivals Audi and BMW.

Mercedes intends to set up the plant in the state of Sao Paulo to assemble the mid-sized C-Class sedan and GLA compact sport-utility vehicle, it was reported.

The CEO of parent company Daimler, Dieter Zetsche, has vowed to reclaim the number one position in global luxury-auto sales by the end of the decade after losing the top spot to BMW in 2005 and ceding second place to Audi in 2011.

Mercedes and Audi are restoring car production in Brazil, and BMW is starting assembly in the southern state of Santa Catarina next year and is investing EUR 200 million in the new facility.
