IULTCS addresses chrome debate in new paper

The International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS) has made available on its website a presentation detailing key facts about the use of chromium in the leather industry.

Chair of the IULTCS research commission, Dr Dietrich Tegtmeyer, co-authored the presentation with his Lanxess colleague, Dr Martin Kleban. It is available at this link Chromium and Leather Research.

The debate surrounding chromium, its use in the tanning industry, its presence in leather, and the potential health risks of chrome compounds has received much attention recently, IULTCS explained in a statement, adding that a scientific approach and a balanced view are needed to ensure that the facts are correct and information is used appropriately.

“In the end, potential risks need to be properly evaluated and managed,” it said. “This is important for the continued viability and use of this very important tanning agent for the leather industry.”

The report outlines nine key points for the tanner to ensure there is no generation of Cr VI during leather production or use. It is being translated into a number of languages for wider dissemination to the global leather industry.
