21/11/2012
Swiss research agency Digital Luxury Group (DLG) has launched a new report on demand for high-end handbags, The World Handbag Report.

Geneva-based DLG says it has devised proprietary technology that allows it to track the performance of more than 120 “luxury and premium” handbag brands across 10 markets: Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States.

The research is b
ased on what the company calls analysis of “hundreds of millions of spontaneous and unbiased consumer searches” on the internet, using the Google, Bing, Yandex and Baidu search engines.

Specific editions for each of the ten markets are available at a price of EUR 5,500 each. A comprehensive edition covering all ten markets is EUR 12,500 and premium edition that promises, in addition, two timely updates in 2013 costs EUR 19,500.

DLG divides the brands into Premium, Prestige, High-End and Powerhouse, categories it breaks down as follows.

Premium, which includes Aquascutum, Botkier, Calvin Klein, Coach, Cole Haan, Diane von Furstenberg, Furla, Hugo Boss, Kate Spade, Lancel, Longchamp, Thierry Mugler, Vera Wang and Vivienne Westwood, represents “accessible luxury”, with the price for a medium-sized leather tote bag coming in at less than EUR 400.

Prestige includes big fashion brands with many different lines, whose medium-sized leather totes cost between EUR 400 and EUR 700. Names in this category include Michael Kors, Mulberry, Alexander McQueen, Issey Miyake, Jil Sander, Loewe, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Moncler, Moschino, Mulberry, Ralph Lauren, Roberto Cavalli, Sonia Rykiel, St. John and Stuart Weitzman.

High-End has entry level prices for medium-sized leather totes at above EUR 700. These brands include Givenchy,
Valextra, Versace, Goyard, Hervé Léger, Lanvin, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Manolo Blahnik, Marchesa, Missoni, Miu Miu and Dunhill.

Powerhouse brands have similarly high starting prices, but the difference in this category is that each of the brands achieved revenues of more than EUR 500 million in 2011. There are 14 of them: Armani, Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Chanel, Christian Dior, Ermenegildo Zegna, Fendi, Gucci, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo and Tod’s.
