Several members of the Bangladesh Leather, Leathergoods and Footwear Exporters Association (BFLLFEA), including chairman M Belal Hossain, former chairman M Tipu Sultan, adviser Rezaul Karim Ansari, former senior vice chairman MA Awal and Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) chairman Shamsul Huda and chief consultant Shahin Ahmed, have met with Industries Minister Dilip Barua to discuss issues related to the relocating of tanneries from Hazaribagh to a new location at Savar near Dhaka city, according to media reports.

They urged the Bangladesh government to allocate $30.6 million for the acquisition of 200 acres of land for building dumping yards and labour buildings for the workers on the proposed site at Savar. They also demanded the inclusion of their representatives in the installation process of a central effluent treatment plant (CETP) at Savar so that they can monitor it to ensure it meets the required standard.

Dilip Barua assured that he would try to come up with a package to resolve all the problems, including the compensation issue, after discussion with the finance minister. Mr Barua hoped that the CETP installation process would be completed within a year.
