Demand for European hides from China appears lower than expected, but it is unclear whether this is because tanners are sourcing them elsewhere, or they do not have as many orders.

The author also asks why the furniture-focused tanneries in the country do not seem to be as busy as they were last year, when all the statistics point to a booming housing market.

We hear that some Italian tanneries are suffering a backlog due to problems with effluent treatment, which is making them avoid salted skins and instead purchase wet white or wet blue. This is good news for suppliers of those materials and has pushed the prices up.
