Eritrea ban lifted
25/11/2008
The ministry of agriculture in Saudi Arabia has lifted the temporary ban imposed on the import of sheep, cows and camels from Eritrea to ensure availability of live stocks on one of the biggest Muslim festival, Eid Azha, which next falls on December 8.
A huge quantity of animals is scarified for the feast, which provides ample raw materials to tanneries.
According to local media, the decision stipulates that the exported livestock from Eritrea should be subject to strict conditions, including 30 days in isolation and authenticated certificates from veterinary authorities in the African countries. Animal diseases that the government in Saudi Arabia is worried about include Rift Valley Fever, which can be passed to humans.
