Despite facing stiff competition from low-priced Asian goods and the negative impact of the euro/dollar exchange rate, Spain’s leather goods sector enjoyed a positive year in 2004. Figures released by the Spanish Foreign Trade Institute (ICEX), show that exports amounted to €232.6 million in the first nine months alone (January to September).

According to estimates from the Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Leather Goods, Travel Items and Related Products (ASEFMA), the figures for the full year are expected to reach €329.3 million, a 12% increase compared with 2003. This figure €329.3 million equates to 18% of total production being exported.

Small leather items accounted for the majority of the exports, with leather bags coming in second place.
