Leather firms commit to setting up Kashmir units

11/08/2004

Four of India’s leading leather companies from Chennai, have announced their intention to establish units in Jammu & Kashmir.

This commitment is the result of a concerted effort on the part of the Jammu and Kasmir administration to boost the leather industry and to establish manufacturing units in the region.

Plans include the construction of two tannery clusters each with a common effluent treatment plant and the establishment of two vocational training institutes. Leather will also be introduced as a subject at the universities in the state.

One leading exporter is to establish a garment unit in Srinagar, whilst another of the industry’s forerunners is looking to set up modern tanneries in the valley. The A.V. Thomas group plans to use small local manufacturers to make a wide range of products. Meanwhile, one company which manufactures shoes for Florsheim, is to go as far as opening a facility in Jammu in the next 4-5 months.

Raw materials are in abundant supply, according to industry officials in Jammu & Kashmir, and incentives will be offered to industrialists until March 2015.
