ECHA opens consultation on TCMTB alternatives
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has opened a public consultation as part of its assessment of the active substance TCMTB under the EU Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR).
TCMTB (2-(thiocyanomethylthio)benzothiazole), widely used as a fungicide in leather processing and preservation, is being assessed as a potential Candidate for Substitution under Article 10 of the BPR. Norway is acting as the evaluating Competent Authority for the assessment.
As part of the process, regulators are seeking information on the availability and suitability of alternative substances or technologies. The assessment will consider factors including technical feasibility, efficacy, availability and any significant practical or economic disadvantages associated with alternatives.
ECHA's consultation opened on August 7 and will remain open until October 5, 2026. Companies and organisations can submit information and practical experience regarding the performance and feasibility of potential alternatives directly to ECHA.
The consultation forms part of the wider review of TCMTB under the BPR and will contribute to determining whether alternative solutions can provide equivalent performance under industrial conditions.
