Germany to resubmit bisphenols restriction dossier in 2027
Germany is preparing to resubmit its EU REACH restriction proposal on bisphenols next year after withdrawing the original dossier for a major overhaul following stakeholder feedback and new data.
The updated proposal is expected to be submitted to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in 2027.
The restriction targets a group of bisphenols including BPA, BPS and BPF, with a focus on reducing environmental emissions from industrial and consumer uses. In the leather sector, the proposal is closely linked to syntan and polymer-based retanning agents where bisphenol derivatives are used as building blocks or may appear as residual monomers.
Industry sources indicate the revised dossier is likely to refine scope definitions and emission assumptions, particularly around bound versus free bisphenols in polymer systems. Once resubmitted, it will re-enter ECHA’s scientific evaluation process, including assessment by the Risk Assessment and Socio-Economic Analysis committees.
If adopted, the measure could reinforce pressure on chemical suppliers to accelerate bisphenol-free retanning and finishing systems already emerging in response to brand-level restrictions.
