Walsall reverses Leather Museum relocation plans
Walsall Council's Cabinet has approved proposals to keep the Walsall Leather Museum at its current Littleton Street West location, reversing previous plans to relocate the museum and convert the building for educational use.
The council said the museum building itself is a key part of the heritage attraction, providing authenticity, historical context and a visitor experience that would be difficult to replicate elsewhere. The decision revokes Cabinet resolutions made in September 2025 that would have seen the museum moved from its historic site.
According to a report presented to Cabinet, public engagement highlighted strong support for retaining the museum at Littleton Street, with a campaign petition attracting 6,490 signatures. The report also noted opportunities to secure external funding to improve the museum offer and strengthen its contribution to Walsall's visitor economy.
The recommendation follows a review by the council's new administration, which placed greater weight on the views of residents and stakeholders and the heritage value of the existing museum building.
Retaining the museum at Littleton Street will require the council to negotiate the surrender of a lease previously agreed with Walsall College and manage associated legal, contractual and funding risks.
Following the decision, campaign group leader Lauren Broxton welcomed the outcome, describing it as a significant milestone after an 18-month campaign to preserve the museum at its historic home. She thanked supporters for their backing and said the group would continue working to secure the museum's long-term future.
