New €18m facility for Catalan leather cluster
Catalan-based Novicuir has begun construction of a new leather industry facility in Santa Margarida de Montbui, Spain, backed by an investment of €18 million and support from ACCIÓ, the Catalan Government's agency for business competitiveness.
The 12,000-square-metre site will specialise in the preparation and preservation of hides, handling material collected primarily from slaughterhouses in Catalonia before it moves on to the tanning stage. The project is expected to create around 20 new jobs.
ACCIÓ has supported the investment with a €300,000 grant through its High Business Impact Aid programme.
According to the company, the new facility has been designed to strengthen quality control, improve the sustainability of production processes and provide full traceability of hides throughout the supply chain.
The project is being developed by Pieles y Cueros Palomeras y Gambús, Rémy Carriat and Curtidos Badia, with the backing of a shared strategic customer. The partners said the investment will reinforce the competitiveness of the Conca d'Òdena leather cluster and support the wider tanning industry in the region.
