A project is under way in Catalonia to make use of and create value from waste from the leather sector. The project, called Re-Genera, aims to use discarded materials generated during the leather-making process and turn them into products that can be used in other applications.

Leather Cluster Barcelona, the group of leather manufacturers based in and around Igualada, is running the project and has said it hopes it will lead to zero-waste production in the leather sector.

Possible added value products that the project leaders have already identified include amino acids that can be used as biostimulants for organic farming, and oils that can go into biodiesel.
