Brazilian shoe-makers feel relief from lower tariffs

Brazil exported 8.2 million pairs of shoes worth $73.5 million in April, a 9% increase in volume but a 7% decrease in revenue compared with the same month last year.

Excluding Argentina, exports to Latin American markets in April increased by 25% in value and 53% in volume.

From January to April, exports totalled 34.5 million pairs and $284.4 million, declines of 12% and 19%, respectively, according to Brazilian Footwear Industries Association (Abicalçados).

Abicalçados’ executive president, Haroldo Ferreira, said: “The increase in shipments to the US indicates not only a recovery, but also an anticipation of exports to the destination following the tariff relief, since the additional 50% tariff is no longer being applied and Brazilian footwear is now competing under an equal 10% tariff rate."

The year-to-date figures still reflect the impacts of the first quarter, marked by the US tariff shock, weaker momentum in traditional markets, and lower average prices associated with changes in the export mix by product and destination.
