Leather industry urged to respond to EUDR consultation
Gustavo González-Quijano, EU advocacy consultant and past secretary-general of the leather industry’s main representative body in the European Union, Cotance, has called on the global leather industry to take part in the European Commission’s public consultation on the proposed Delegated Act to amend, simplify and correct Annex 1 of the EU Regulation on deforestation-free supply chains (EUDR).
He said the consultation is now open and has already received 39 comments. The consultation period runs until June 1.
Mr González-Quijano said the consultation gives the leather industry an opportunity to express its support for the proposed exclusion of hides, skins and leather from the scope of the regulation. He also urged EU co-legislators to resist what he described as “fallacious arguments” from NGO lobbying campaigns that, he said, want to see the collapse of the EU tanning industry.
