China’s decision to eliminate tariffs from 53 African countries will create investment opportunities and boost sectors including leathergoods, local press have reported.

China’s vice-president, Han Zheng, is currently on an eight-day state visit to  Kenya, South Africa and the Seychelles.

At the end of last year, the South African Footwear and Leather Council (SAFLEC) took part in the China International Import Expo in Shanghai.

SAFLEC director Nerisha Jairaj said its 250 members wanted to explore new market segments, including luxury, outdoor and “eco-conscious” consumers. “Our participation provided an unparalleled opportunity for South African manufacturers to reach buyers, distributors and retailers who are otherwise difficult to access.”
