Market Intelligence: China remains the key

We published the first Leatherbiz Market Intelligence of 2025 on January 7. It is available for subscribers to read in full here and here.

The report makes it clear that the global leather industry starts 2025 with little optimism, unfortunately.

China remains they key to further development in the leather business, Market Intelligence says. Without growth in Chinese production and consumption, it says it will be difficult to expect a trend reversal this year.

The Chinese government is doing all it can to boost national consumption, but consumers are still not really responding as hoped. Recent announcements from companies such as Porsche, which is going to close almost 40 of its showrooms in China following disappointing sales, have done little to lift the mood.

After the Chinese New Year, which this year falls on January 29, further meetings of the political leadership in China will take place, which should lead to additional measures aimed at helping to boost consumption.

One advantage that China has compared to many western markets, Market Intelligence says, is that the broad perception of leather there remains positive. It looks as though wider public perception of the material will remain a problem in many other markets. It concludes that it would be good if the meat and leather industries could develop effective ways of presenting leather fairly and properly to the public.
