SON urges global standards adoption

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) recently called on leather and textile industry stakeholders to adhere to global standards and is working with various stakeholders to ensure compliance.

Director General Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke highlighted the importance of involving micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the standards development process through technical committees.

SON’s efforts have significantly improved the quality of leather products in the country, aimed at boosting the manufacturing sector in Abia State, in line with the government’s goal to diversify the economy.  The remarks were made at a workshop in Aba, titled “Standardisation for competitiveness: Unlocking Nigeria’s non-oil sector.”

Emphasising that Abia, known as the “Japan of Nigeria,” is vital to the country’s manufacturing and deserves support from both government and NGOs, Mr Okeke encouraged industry players to embrace standards to benefit from government initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement and access to funding and global markets.
