US to increase bird-flu testing in cows

20/08/2024

The US Department of Agriculture will increase its testing of bird flu in cattle from mid-September until the end of the year at least.

The H5 bird flu is widespread in wild birds and is causing outbreaks in poultry and US dairy cows.

Around 200 dairy herds have been affected, with 14 human cases (between 2022 and July 2024) while the disease has been found in 100 million poultry in the US in this recent outbreak.

US beef is safe to eat and the public health risk is low, according to USDA.
