South Korea tightens quarantine measures

25/07/2011

The South Korean government has reinforced quarantine measures for travellers returning from countries affected by foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) or bird flu, according to local media.

The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said travellers who have visited such countries must report their visits to quarantine officials on arriving in South Korea where they will be examined and sterilised.

The increased quarantine measures are introduced as part of the ministry’s efforts to prevent future outbreaks of the diseases in South Korea.

The outbreak of FMD that began in November 2010 in South Korea has forced the government to cull over 3 million pigs in the country, along with thousands of cattle. No FMD case has been reported in the country since late May.
