Leather export figures hold up for Brazil in spite of floods

14/06/2024

The value of Brazil’s exports of hides in the first five months of 2024 was just under $550 million, an increase of 17.7% year on year.

In terms of area, tanners in Brazil exported 17.3 million square-metres of material between January and May this year, an increase of 26.2%.

On publishing the results, industry body CICB said the figures had been affected by the floods in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in April and May, but that tanners there had achieved an impressively quick recovery to keep exports on track.

Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil’s biggest producer of leather, contributed 26.3% of total leather export value during the five-month period.
