Chemicals to undergo in-house environmental assessment at JBS Couros

13/06/2024

Brazilian leather manufacturing group JBS Couros has established a new, in-house designation for leather chemicals.

It will use the new tool to assess products from chemical companies and decide which ones it can classify as Responsible Tanning Chemicals (RTCs).

There are four criteria against which JBS Couros will assess chemical products: biodegradability, hazardous substances, biogenic carbon and environmental impact. It will share its evaluation with suppliers.

“There is no sustainability without collaboration,” said JBS Couros sustainability director, Kim Sena, at the time of the announcement. “Working with the chemicals industry towards increasingly sustainable products has huge potential. With RTCs, we hope to see concrete medium-term results in the continued reduction of the environmental impact of the leather production chain.”
