Ethiopia launches strategy to boost leather sector

The Manufacturing Industry Development Institute (MIDI) has unveiled a new leather strategy to tackle key challenges and develop comprehensive solutions for Ethiopia's leather industry.

At the National Ethiopian Highland Leather conference, MIDI Deputy Director General Seleshi Lema highlighted the sector's progress, noting successful international market trials supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

"The meeting aims to enhance the sector's potential, address challenges, and provide a roadmap for marketing and promotion," said Seleshi Lema.

While export earnings have stagnated, the sector has made gains in import substitution and job creation. The Ministry of Industry and MIDI's strategic plan aims to revitalise the sector by addressing issues such as raw material quality, technology, and market diversification.
