Push for eco-friendly leather hub to boost exports

In a recent press briefing, ahead of the "National High-Level Dialogue for Greening the Tannery and Leather Sector in Bangladesh" seminar, stakeholders emphasised the urgent need to convert Savar's tannery industrial city into an eco-friendly hub to drive Bangladesh's leather and leather product exports, a cornerstone of the nation's economy.

Ishrat Shabnam, representing the European Union Delegation to Bangladesh, disclosed that in Fiscal Year 2023, exports in this sector amounted to $1.22 billion, with ambitious targets of reaching $12-13 billion by 2030. The development of an eco-friendly leather industrial city was underscored as crucial, alongside the imperative for factories to obtain Leather Working Group (LWG) certification to enhance export opportunities.

The forthcoming seminar is poised to confront environmental challenges and foster compliance among tannery owners. Notable attendees slated for the event include Environment Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury and representatives spanning various sectors.

Muhammad Amanullah, representing Solidar Suisse, shared insights into the ongoing project "Building a Sustainable Leather Industry Sector in Bangladesh," designed to instil sustainable practices across stakeholders involved in the country's leather industry.
