Forbes List proves leather bags are a good business idea

Business media group Forbes published its thirty-eighth annual ranking of the world’s richest people on April 2.

It was no surprise to learn that Wall Street’s tech tribe dominates the top ten, but for the second year running, a maker of leather handbags, Bernard Arnault (pictured), has kept Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg et al away from the top spot.

Forbes puts the chief executive of Paris-based luxury group LVMH, and his family, clear at number one with personal wealth of $233 billion. Mr Musk is in second place with $195 billion.

Other business leaders from the wider fashion industry to secure a high-ranking in the 2024 list include the founder of Inditex, Amancio Ortega, at number 13 with personal wealth that Forbes calculates at $103 billion, founder of Japanese brand Uniqlo, Tadashi Yanai, at 29 with $42.8 billion, and co-founder of Nike Phil Knight in thirtieth place with $40.9 billion.

Sharing fortieth spot are the co-owners of luxury brand Chanel, brothers Alain and Gérard Wertheimer, with personal wealth that Forbes states as $36.8 billion each.

After that, we have the chief executive of Kering, François-Henri Pinault, at number 54 with wealth listed (for him and his family) as $31.6 billion.
