Zeology maintains Cradle to Cradle certificate

27/03/2024
Nera Tanning, a company established by leather chemicals group Royal Smit & Zoon in 2021, has recently announced that its  Zeology product has again received a platinum-level Cradle to Cradle Material Health certificate, following its initial certification in 2022.

The certificate is a verification of the health and safety of a product, using the material health requirements of the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard. The Platinum level is the highest level a product can achieve.

Pim Wilgenberg, Nera Venture Manager, said “We are very proud to have acquired this important certification. So far, Zeology is the only leather tanning agent that is C2C Certified Material Health Certificate at the Platinum level and has obtained the ToxFMD Screened Chemistry certification.”

For the chemical toxicity assessment, different phases and processes are considered, including final manufacturing, professional use, use, intended end of use which involves release to the environment, and unintended end of use such as landfilling and incineration.

The C2C Certified Material Health Certificate is a stand-alone certificate issued to applicant companies for products that meet the rigorous, science-based requirements of the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard Material Health category. These requirements provide companies with a means of assessing, optimising and verifying the safety and circularity of the chemicals and materials in a product or product group.
