Global dairy producers form emissions alliance
Six major dairy companies have joined in agreement to disclose methane emissions as part of a new global alliance launched at the COP28 summit in Dubai.
The Dairy Methane Action Alliance was formed by Danone, Bel Group, General Mills, Lactalis USA, Kraft Heinz and Nestle, the world's largest dairy companies, Reuters reports.
This move is a significant step towards reducing the impact of livestock on the environment, as it is responsible for approximately 30% of global anthropogenic methane emissions.
The alliance members have committed to reporting their methane emissions by mid-2024 and will also develop methane action plans by the end of that year. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, nearly 30 times more potent, yet shorter lived, than carbon dioxide, and is a major focus of attempts to curb global warming.
he alliance's efforts to reduce methane emissions from the dairy industry will play a crucial role in mitigating the impact of livestock on the environment and promoting sustainable practices in the industry.
