UNIDO celebrates Africa Industrialisation Day
United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and several partners celebrated Africa Industrialisation Day, on November 21, an event highlighting the importance of industrialisation in Africa.
This year's theme was "Accelerating Africa's industrialisation through the empowerment of African women in processing for an integrated market." The event focused on the crucial role of women-led enterprises in promoting industrialisation and integrating African markets under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.
During the event, UNIDO reaffirmed its commitment to support Ethiopia's industry development and the creation of inclusive, resilient, and prosperous societies and provided slaughterhouse machines and tools to abattoirs in Ethiopia worth €430,000 (approximately $470,000). This donation aims to boost the production of quality hides and skins that can be used to manufacture high-quality leather and leather products.
The event was a significant milestone in promoting industrialisation and inclusive economic growth in Africa, with a particular focus on women-led enterprises. The donation of slaughterhouse machines and tools to abattoirs in Ethiopia is expected to help create employment opportunities and improve the livelihoods of many people in the country.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed November 20 as "Africa Industrialisation Day" in December 1989. Since then, the United Nations System has organised events worldwide to raise awareness about the importance of Africa's industrialisation and the challenges faced by the continent.
