UNCTAD to hold Nairobi workshop on eco-tanning processes
Promoting the implementation and integration of “green and sustainable leather tanning and trading technologies” in the Kenyan leather sector, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) have joined together in collaboration to provide a hybrid workshop to help study and address the issues surrounding the development and growth of sustainable green leather and associated value chains in the region.
Building on recommendations from the 2014 implemented Kenya Leather Industry Action Plan, the focus will be to build institutional capabilities through training, with the main objectives being:
1. Capacity building on the key aspects of eco-production and preservation methods; green sustainable eco-tanning technologies; eco-friendly and sustainable management of tannery wastes; leather product standards and marketability; research partnerships and collaboration between government institutions and the private sector.
2. Development of a joint forum model for legal framework discussions governing integration and implementation of current green sustainable leather tanning in Kenya and the East African Community (EAC) region, as a means to enhance cleaner technologies and international trade in leather products.
The workshop will take place at the Best Western Plus Meridian Hotel on July 19 and 20.
