Kenyan president looks to ban leather imports

26/06/2023

Further to his comments made at the beginning of June, that county governments and the private sector must work together to close the gaps in the leather industry, Kenya’s president, William Ruto has now pledged to ban imports on leather goods within two years.

Talking to local media he said the ban would support local manufacturers and claimed that  “We choose to import leather from outside which is costly. This is not right. There is no miracle in the imported leather. It is from the same cows".

It is believed his pledge also includes footwear as well as leathergoods.
