Porsche joins LWG for sustainable leather commitment

High-performance automotive brand Porsche has joined the Leather Working Group (LWG), alongside other brands in the VW group.

At the beginning of 2022, the car manufacturer implemented mandatory material-specific specifications for leather for all new contracts. As part of the specifications, suppliers must disclose raw material origins and undergo third party audits, such as provided by LWG, for sustainability standards.

“Leather is a mark of quality for Porsche customers. Together with our suppliers, we are committed to internationally accepted standards. The facilities in which our leather is manufactured is also important. They should receive certification from LWG,” said Barbara Frenkel, Executive Board Member for Procurement at Porsche AG.

Head of Leather Working Group, Christina Trautmann, said: “We look forward to the active participation of Porsche and the brands of the Volkswagen Group. With their support, we want to advance the development of tools and methods that can positively influence the leather industry.”

In the statement Porsche said that they oblige their suppliers to respect animal welfare and to ensure responsible processing and production of leather.
