Some Mini production to move away
The iconic Mini that up to now has been built at the Cowley plant in Oxford is to have part of its production moved to China and Germany. Parent group BMW insists, however, that Oxford will “remain at the heart of Mini production”.
All Minis produced by BMW will be electric by 2030. Some production will be moved to China after signing an agreement with the Chinese car maker, Great Wall, in 2018.
In effect, model production will be allocated with the hatchback and small SUV electric Minis being built in China. The electric Countryman model will be built in Leipzig, Germany. Cowley will build the Mini Cooper three-door and five-door Hatch models. The Mini Convertible will also be built at the Oxford plant from 2025.
While rebalancing its global Mini production as it goes all electric by 2030, BMW has given assurances to the leader of Oxford City Council that jobs will not be affected at the Cowley plant.
