US cattle on feed up slightly in September report
Placements in US feedlots during August totalled 2.11 million head, slightly above the August 2021 placements of 2.06 million.
Marketing of fed cattle during August totalled 2 million head, 6% above the 2021 figure, while other disappearances were 53 thousand head during August, 10% below 2021.
Total on-feed numbers for September 1, 2022, totalled 11.28 million head, which is only 45 thousand head more than a year ago.
The major feeding states that showed steady or higher year-on-year on-feed numbers were Iowa, Nebraska, and Texas.
On the other hand, Kansas and Colorado were the major feeding regions that were lower compared to 2021. This was owing to drought conditions that prompted ranchers to place animals in feedlots earlier rather than risk losing them.
