UN Global Compact participation for Gruppo Mastrotto
Arzignano-based leather manufacturer Gruppo Mastrotto is to take part in the United Nations Global Compact, which the UN refers to as the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative.
More than 15,000 companies around the world and 4,000 non-business organisations are involved in the initiative, which the UN launched at the start of the new millennium.
Participating companies have to commit to ten clearly defined principles to support corporate sustainability, with these principles coming from established UN treaties on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. Company leaders need to commit to bringing these principles into all aspects of the business, to share progress transparently and to support wider UN initiatives, including the 17 Sustainable Development Goals the organisation set up in 2015.
Gruppo Mastrotto said its desire to take part in the initiative stemmed from the belief that “lasting, balanced and inclusive development requires an economy with solid ethical foundations”.
President of the leather manufacturing group, Chiara Mastrotto, said: “By participating in the Global Compact we will improve our organisational and planning abilities, thanks to local and international activities, workshops with global companies and leaders and multi-stakeholder initiatives.”
She said taking part in these activities would allow the group “to acquire approaches that are different from ours”, adding that this was something Gruppo Mastrotto viewed as essential for identifying “innovative and effective solutions”.
Ms Mastrotto said the group would also look beyond its own walls and involve supply chain partners in these initiatives.
