Traditions alive and kicking as SB Foot celebrates 150 years

Leather manufacturer SB Foot Tanning Company has said it remains committed to using wooden drums to produce its finished leather.

The company is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year and has said the wooden drums it uses for retanning today at its facility in Red Wing, Minnesota, are similar to the ones that founder, Silas Buck Foot, and his team used when the tannery was built in 1872.

On marking the anniversary, it said: “Over the last century-and-a-half, countless technology advances have emerged that make tanning more automated and efficient. But for SB Foot, producing top-quality leather of the ideal colour, consistency and durability is still mostly a matter of applying time-honoured techniques. And paying absolute attention to detail in a process that involves dozens of steps.”
